My paintings begin life as drawings I make in a sketchbook or on loose sheets of paper. Sometimes the designs are made scrupulously, other times the sketches are fast and free. Anything is allowed. Worked on steadily day to day, the paintings emerge organically in stages. Until, one day, they come alive.
Imagery for paintings can come from any area of interest: conversations, travels, folklore, books. So long as the idea is engaging the paintings can take on any tone. Off-kilter, gracious, humorous, sincere.
Using dry and wet oil paint applications I build layers of texture and colour on the surface. There is an attempt to create an atmosphere of openness – something familiar and mysterious, warm and strange. Sun spilled windows, wandering mental landscapes beyond.
